Welcome to Sumba 2025

A first-of-its-kind artfest in Maharashtra, Sumba was created to celebrate art in its truest form. This year shines a light on fading tribal traditions, many kept alive by only a few families. By giving these artists a stage, we hope their stories travel farther and last longer.

Inspired by Late Prof. Raosaheb Gurav and his 6 decades of devotion to art, Sumba carries forward his belief that every artist deserves to be seen. The festival will return each year, keeping his spirit and the artists he cared for at its heart.

A platform to celebrate art legends and bring their stories to light

Born from the vision of the legend

Late Prof. Roasaheb Gurav

Sumba was created in memory of Late Prof. Raosaheb Gurav, whose life was shaped by art, mentorship, and an unbreakable bond with tradition. His work, especially the Dhangar series, carried the landscapes of his childhood and the honesty of rural life, and his guidance helped generations of young artists find their path. He believed that art should stay rooted in its people and that every artist deserves a stage.

His daughter, Chitra Mete, now carries that purpose forward. Sumba is her way of keeping his legacy alive by building a space where artists are supported, traditions are preserved, and his values continue to guide the community

A stage for tribal voices in 2025

& many more stories in years to come

Sumba begins its first chapter with tribal art because India is home to more than 800 tribal artforms, yet many of them are fading as artists struggle for recognition and steady income. By placing tribal artists at the centre of the 2025 edition, Sumba creates a space where their work can be seen, understood, and supported directly.

This year is dedicated to protecting what’s slipping away and bringing these stories back into the light, with future editions opening their doors to other artforms across India.
